Description
Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) pioneered a radical new approach to art in the early twentieth century. Her innovative work, which predated that of Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, and Piet Mondrian, explored the possibilities of abstraction. This book presents af Klint's own writings and notebooks, offering a unique insight into her artistic investigation. Af Klint's artistic journey began with traditional subjects such as landscapes and botanical studies. However, she also became fascinated with the spiritual dimension and the invisible relationships that shape our world. She joined the Theosophical Society and, with four fellow female members, began to study mediumship. The result was a remarkable series of 193 individual works, featuring botanically inspired images, mystical symbols, diagrams, words, and geometric series. Facsimile reproductions of af Klint's early notebooks accompany the first English translation of her extensive writings. This book provides a rare opportunity to experience the arc of af Klint's artistic investigation in her own words, shedding new light on her groundbreaking work.
