Description

Description

The Loeb edition of Philostratus' works presents two unique and sophisticated treatises: Heroicus Gymnasticus and its companion Discourses. In Heroicus, a conversation between a vinedresser and a Phoenician sailor explores the beauty and worship of Homeric heroes, revealing unknown stories from the Trojan campaign.

Complementing this work is Gymnasticus, the sole surviving ancient treatise on sports, which reshapes conventional ideas about athletic bodies and expertise. This volume also delves into the history of the Olympic Games and other major Greek athletic festivals, portraying them as distinctive venues for knowledge display.

Two brief Discourses round out this collection, offering further insight into Philostratus' creative and philosophical approach to literature and culture.
