Description

Helena, written by Evelyn Waugh in 1950, is his only historical novel. The story follows Helena's quest to find the relics of the cross on which Christ was crucified.

The novel explores the corruption and instability of Roman society through the eyes of its protagonist, a devout Christian who fears for her son's imperial destiny. Despite her saintliness, Helena is unable to save those she loves from the consequences of her son's rise to power.

Set against the backdrop of a declining Roman Empire, Helena draws on historical tradition to create a rich and thought-provoking tale of faith, duty, and the complexities of human relationships.
