Description
Adela Frost wants to do something with her life. She takes a chance and travels to Burma for the summer, volunteering in a Buddhist monastery. There, she finds fresh confidence as she teaches English to the monks and studies meditation with the wise abbot. As Adela immerses herself in her new environment, she develops feelings for Thiha, an ex-political prisoner with a shadowy past. However, when some of the monks express support for the persecution of Burma's Rohingya Muslim minority, Adela glimpses the turmoil that lies beneath the country's tranquil surface. She becomes determined to help stop communal violence and concocts a scheme with Thiha's assistance. Set against the backdrop of Burma's fractured transition to democracy, this coming-of-age story critiques "voluntourism" and humanitarian intervention as Adela navigates her quest for connection across cultural boundaries.
