Description

Harriet Jacobs A Life by Jean Fagan Yellin is a groundbreaking study that sheds new light on the life of Harriet Jacobs, author of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. This book provides a detailed account of Jacobs's experiences, including her years spent hiding in her grandmother's attic from her abusive master. Yellin's scholarship restores a life whose sorrows and triumphs reflect the history of the nineteenth century, from slavery to the Civil War, to Reconstruction and beyond. By illuminating the wider world into which Jacobs escaped, Yellin offers a nuanced understanding of this pivotal period in American history. This book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the black experience during this time, and is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of slavery and its legacy.
