Harriet Backer: A Pioneer in European Art

This catalogue presents Harriet Backer to an international audience, shedding light on her significant contributions to 19th-century Norwegian painting and the role of women artists in Europe. Born in 1845, Backer was a trailblazer who debuted in the Paris Salon in 1880 and established a successful school for painters back in Oslo.

Backer's oeuvre is characterized by its richly coloured interior scenes, sensitive portrayals of rural life, portraits, and still lifes. Her use of plein-air painting, realism, and Impressionism sets her works apart, not only in Norway but also within the European art context. This publication provides a comprehensive overview of her artistic achievements and places her work within the broader European art historical landscape.
