In June 1940, 17,000 people left Guernsey for England, including 5,000 school children and their teachers, as well as 500 mothers who acted as helpers. The Channel Islands were occupied by Nazi forces from this date, making the evacuation a significant event in British history. The evacuees faced an unfamiliar environment in Northern English towns, where they received assistance from Canada and the USA. One Guernsey school was even sponsored by wealthy Americans, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Hollywood stars. As the war drew to a close, the evacuees began returning home in May 1945, but many chose to stay in England. The bond between Guernsey and Northern England forged during this period remains strong today, a testament to the generosity and kindness shown to those who were forced to leave their homes.
