Description
The story behind the National Memorial Arboretum is one of dedication and remembrance. Since its inception in 1997, the site at Alrewas, Staffordshire, has evolved into a year-round focus for remembering those who have served their country in both peace and war. Planting began with the support of hundreds of organizations, including serving and retired groups, and featured a range of memorials, such as a life-size wooded polar bear, a grove of Irish trees, and an Avenue of Chestnuts. The site also includes a Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness, a rose garden for Britain's war-widows, and a small museum funded by the Far East Prisoners of War. The importance of the National Memorial Arboretum was further underscored in 2007 when HM the Queen officially opened the Armed Forces Memorial, which commemorates all service personnel lost on active service since the end of the Second World War.
