The title of this exhibition refers to both a literal thread of figuration that runs throughout the works presented and the complex symbolism of the human body in medieval art. During this period, the human form was imbued with significant religious and philosophical meaning, existing in a state of flux between idealism and disfigurement. Representations of suffering bodies became increasingly prominent in public life, as seen in works such as Jörg Lederer's The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, which highlights the late medieval trend of displaying wounded human bodies in central spaces. The exhibition also explores the worship of saints' body parts and the construction of grand sacrament houses in Germany, where Christ's transubstantiated body was ostentatiously displayed. The Medieval Body presents a unique perspective on the human form as both physical entity and recognizable metaphor, featuring works such as Lorenz Lechler's Monumental Drawing of a Sacrament House, which dates back to 1502.
