Description
Global Indios: The Indigenous Struggle for Justice in Sixteenth-Century Spain by Nancy E. van Deusen explores the complex history of indio enslavement in the Spanish empire during the sixteenth century. In this study, van Deusen examines over one hundred lawsuits brought to the Spanish courts between 1530 and 1585 by indio slaves seeking to secure their freedom. These cases reveal the challenges of defining who was an indio and who was not, particularly in a context where categories of free and slave were often blurred. By analyzing these lawsuits, van Deusen forces a rethinking of the meaning of indio, highlighting the need to situate colonial Spanish American indigenous subjects within a global context.
