Description
A Glimpse of Empire by Jessica Douglas and Jessica Douglas-Home is a captivating account of a young Anglo-Irish woman's journey to India in 1911. During her visit, she encounters the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including Indian princes vying for loyalty to the Crown. As Lilah travels through India, her diary reveals her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British rule. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instinctive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and affection for the mother country. The book is enhanced by copious illustrations from her own photographs. This unique perspective offers a glimpse into India's colonial past, showcasing the complexities of loyalty, identity, and culture during this pivotal time period.
