Georgia O'Keeffe's New Yorks is a groundbreaking study that reevaluates her pivotal series of paintings from the late 1920s. In 1924, Georgia O'Keeffe first moved to Manhattan with her husband Alfred Stieglitz, and it was here that she created a powerful body of work inspired by the city's skyscrapers. The resulting "my New Yorks" series consists of approximately twenty-five paintings and numerous drawings, showcasing two distinct types of compositions: expansive views looking down onto the city and humbling views directed up at the urban landscape. O'Keeffe's portrayal of New York was a deliberate departure from her contemporaries, who saw the city as a streamlined, impersonal series of geometric canyons. Instead, she depicted it as an amalgamation of the organic and inorganic, the natural and the constructed. This nuanced approach allowed O'Keeffe to express the city "as it is felt," rather than just its physical form.
