Description
George Farquhar - The Recruiting Officer "Crimes, Like Virtues, are Their Own Rewards." Born in Derry, Ireland in 1677, George Farquhar's early life took an unexpected turn when he left Trinity College, Dublin after just two years. This decision led him to pursue a career in acting on the Dublin stage, but a serious accident soon forced him to abandon his theatrical ambitions. Farquhar's talent for writing eventually prevailed, and his first play, Love and a Bottle, was well received at London's Drury Lane Theatre in 1699. He went on to write several successful plays, including The Constant Couple and Sir Harry Wildair, before being commissioned into the army. During this time, he continued to write, producing works such as The Inconstant or, The Way To Win and The Twin-Rivals. This collection of Farquhar's writings offers a unique insight into his life and work, providing a fascinating glimpse into the life of an 18th-century playwright and soldier.
