Paul Gauguin, 1848-1903 The Primitive Sophisticate In the late 19th century, Gauguin's artistic career was marked by a series of unconventional choices. He abandoned a stint in the French Navy, sold tarpaulins in Copenhagen, and eventually began painting in his spare time. By 1876, he was exhibiting alongside some of the most prominent artists of the time, including Pissarro, Degas, and Monet. Gauguin's artistic style underwent a significant transformation in the late 1880s, as he became increasingly drawn to the exotic landscapes and cultures of Tahiti. His works from this period, such as Woman with a Flower and Sacred Spring: Sweet Dreams, are characterized by a distinctive Primitivist style that celebrates the beauty of nature and the human form. Despite his artistic success, Gauguin's personal life was marked by turmoil and tragedy. His friendship with Vincent van Gogh ended in a violent incident, and he died alone on the Marquesas Islands in 1903. It wasn't until after his death that Gauguin's work began to gain widespread recognition, influencing a new generation of artists, including Picasso and Matisse.
