Galatea and Midas is a collection of two plays by John Lyly, written in the late 16th century. The plays tell the story of two young women, Galatea and Phillida, who are disguised as men to avoid a sacrifice to a sea-monster. In the forest, they fall in love, each believing the other to be a young man. This edition presents these plays in a new translation, edited by scholars who have also worked on other Lyly plays in the Revels series. The plays are notable for their use of mythology to comment on the politics of Lyly's time. Midas, in particular, uses the stories of King Midas and the ass's ears to satirize the excesses of King Philip of Spain. Written in the aftermath of the defeat of Philip's Armada fleet, this satire was intended to win the approval of Queen Elizabeth and her court.
