Description

Plato's philosophy has long been understood as distinct from that of his successors, who came to be known as Platonists. However, Lloyd P. Gerson challenges this view in "From Plato to Platonism", arguing that the ancient disciples were correct in their assessment. Gerson contends that Plato's own philosophy was rooted in a coherent system that has an intricate and meaningful relation to later Platonistic positions. He identifies a matrix of five fundamental principles, which he terms "Ur-Platonism". This concept is central to understanding Plato's philosophy as an attempt to construct the most consistent and defensible positive system. By examining the philosophical principles found in Plato's dialogues and the Platonic tradition that followed, Gerson shows how Platonism, broadly conceived, is fundamentally opposed to naturalism.
