Description
Twenty-five years after Gorbachev's reforms began, the questions surrounding modernisation and political legitimacy remain. This volume brings together six experts to compare and evaluate the evolution of ideas behind reform efforts in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
The book explores how the wave of 'Color Revolutions' that swept across the region in the early 2000s - starting with Serbia, then Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan - was driven by a desire for democratic legitimacy and an end to corruption. Today, Russia's modernisation debate under President Medvedev continues this theme.
Through dispersed discussion from various perspectives, the book examines the contradictory development of ideas around reform, revolution, civil society, and individual chapters from each of the four Colour Revolutions cases.
