Description

Frida Folk by Gaby Franger is a thought-provoking exploration of Frida Kahlo's enduring legacy. This book delves into the countless souvenirs, images and mementos that have kept her alive in popular memory, from fashion dolls to clay figurines. The connection between Frida's art and Mexican folk culture has been remarkably reciprocal, inspiring artists, activists and academics worldwide with extraordinary tributes to her life and persona. This book examines the phenomenon of global appropriation of Frida as an icon, known as Fridamania, and considers whether it is simply commercial kitsch or something more complex. By tracing the trails that Frida herself laid, this book reveals a legacy that allows people to create their own countless versions of her image, in every conceivable material.
