The Peak District area has been a major source of limestone products since Roman times. By 1794, the Peak Forest Tramway was in operation to transport these goods further afield. As the railway network expanded, particularly with the arrival of the Midland Railway in the Buxton area in the 1860s, the transportation of limestone and stone by rail became increasingly important. Today, large quantities of raw limestone, aggregates, and cement are still dispatched across the UK by rail. This book explores some of these traffic flows, both past and present, and how they have influenced locomotives and wagons over time. The routes that remain long-standing, such as the Tunstead to Northwich route, coexist with more recent and short-term spot hire traffic. The shift towards privatisation in the mid-1990s saw EWS dominate the main flows, but today a range of operators compete for lucrative freight contracts from the four main rail-served quarries.
