Description
Frank Holl Emerging from the Shadows A retrospective of artist Francis 'Frank' Montague Holl, one of the great painters of the Victorian era. Holl's work was marked by tragic social realism and penetrating portraits, yet his early death meant that he never fully received the acclaim his talent deserved. At just 15 years old, Holl entered the Royal Academy Schools, where he won a gold medal for religious painting in 1863. His work regularly appeared at the Royal Academy until his death, including a notable portrait of Queen Victoria's engraver, Samuel Cousins, which created a sensation in 1879. Holl's emotive images often focused on bleak themes, such as funeral processions and child mortality, yet found great favour with the public who empathised with his depictions.
