Description

Francis Davison: A Life and Art of Collage. London-born painter Francis Davison was a private man who shunned publicity, yet his work has gained significant critical attention since his death in the mid-1980s. After studying English and Anthropology at Cambridge, he began writing poetry before turning to drawing in 1946. His artistic style evolved over time, with his paintings simplifying into shapes by the early 1950s. Davison's work took a new direction as he transitioned from painting to collage, relying on found papers cut and fitted with great exactitude. By the end of his life, he had developed a unique method of tearing paper that gave him mastery over his material. Although he never received widespread recognition during his lifetime, exhibitions of his work have since been held at major public galleries. Today, Francis Davison is regarded as a major abstract collagist, with his work held in the Arts Council collection. This book provides an update and review of his life and art, shedding new light on this important figure in British art.
