Description

The Hampton Album is a significant work by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the earliest female photojournalists in the United States. Commissioned in 1899 to photograph the Hampton Institute, this luxurious platinum album offers insight into the daily life of students at the institution. Originally exhibited in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, the album features 159 plates that showcase the lives of African American and Native American men and women. The album was discovered by Lincoln Kirstein in a bookstore during World War II and has since been held in high esteem by contemporary artists and historians. This volume makes the album available to the public for the first time, featuring a contextualizing essay by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and a response from artist LaToya Ruby Frazier.
