Description
The Foundations of Socratic Ethics by Alfonso Gómez-Lobo explores the underlying structure of Socratic ethics, revealing a deductive system grounded in two fundamental axioms. One axiom governs practical rationality, while the other specifies the essential ingredients of a fulfilling life. Gómez-Lobo examines Plato's Gorgias as a pivotal text that attempts to establish Socratic ethics on a metaphysical foundation. He argues that this approach allows for a systematic derivation of the good life from a broader principle about goodness in general. This book offers a nuanced analysis of the philosophical underpinnings of Socratic ethics, providing insight into the nature of rationality and the pursuit of happiness.
