Description
Established in northwestern Nebraska in 1874, Fort Robinson played a significant role in the settlement of the West. For nearly 75 years, it served as a military post, participating in several pivotal events in American history. The fort was at the centre of the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877 and witnessed the death of Crazy Horse. In the late 19th century, Fort Robinson was home to the 9th and 10th Cavalry units, known as the buffalo soldiers. The arrival of the railroad in the early 20th century marked a significant change for the post, which later became a remount depot during World War II. Today, Fort Robinson is remembered as a site with a complex history, from its military past to its role in the internment of German POWs and the training of war dogs.
