Forefathers' Eve is a four-part dramatic work that explores themes of mortality, spirituality, and the connection between past and present. Written by Adam Mickiewicz in the early 19th century, this grand Polish drama has become one of the most universal works of literature of its time. The title refers to Dziady, an ancient Slavic and Lithuanian feast commemorating the dead, and reflects the Christian background of the Communion of the Saints. The work features revenant spirits, interpenetration of worlds, and a profound exploration of human existence. Its influence can be seen in world theatre, with notable contributions from Polish playwrights such as Stanislaw Wyspiański and Tadeusz Kantor. This English translation, by Charles S. Kraszewski, is the first complete verse translation of the cycle to be published in English. It has been used in productions at the Teatr Polski in Wroclaw and set to music by Arturas Bumsteinas in his orchestral work Different Trains (2014).
