For a Pragmatics of the Useless by Erin Manning explores what lies beyond established functions and standards of value. Manning examines how certain concepts, such as neurodiversity and black life, operate outside these norms, creating an "approximation of proximity" between them. In this work, Manning draws on the black radical tradition's accounts of black life and the aesthetics of black sociality to propose a new approach: "schizoanalysis". This involves charting techniques for alternative ways of living and learning. The result is a nuanced analysis of how norms shape our understanding of existence, and how we can challenge these norms to create a more inclusive and diverse world. Through its exploration of the relationships between neurotypicality, whiteness, and blackness, Manning's work offers a fresh perspective on the nature of value and existence.
