Description
First Person Jewish explores how Jewish filmmakers use the first person genre to redefine contemporary Jewishness. Alisa S. Lebow examines over a dozen films by Jewish artists, including her own documentary Treyf (1998), to reveal how this approach intersects with historical tropes and stereotypes of the Jew. Lebow focuses on filmmakers working on the margins, analyzing the work of Jonathan Caouette, Chantal Akerman, Alan Berliner, and others. She argues that these filmmakers are confronting a desire to both define and reimagine Jewishness in the contemporary era. Through her multidisciplinary approach, Lebow shows how this form of self-expression is challenging traditional boundaries between autobiography and documentary. By examining first person films, Lebow demonstrates how this genre is changing the art of cinema and recording cultural shifts of our time.
