Description
Figuring Violence: Affective Investments in Perpetual War by Rebecca A. Adelman explores the complex affects that define the latter stages of the war on terror. These subtle and durable emotions, including apprehension, affection, admiration, gratitude, pity, and righteous anger, have become integral to the state's ambitions in a perpetual and unwinnable conflict. Rebecca Adelman examines how these affects are militarized through various cultural practices, often motivated by concern or compassion. However, these practices ultimately reduce the subjectivity of certain groups, such as civilian children, military spouses, veterans with PTSD and TBI, Guantánamo detainees, and military dogs, to abstracted figures, silencing their suffering. By analyzing the ways in which these beings are made visible through mediated and imaginative practices, Adelman reveals how this dynamic perpetuates the very militarism that begets their victimization.
