Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie was an American author, playwright, public reader, and actress who wrote under the pseudonym "Helen Berkley". She began her career as a writer with novels such as The Fortune Hunter (1844) and Evelyn (1845), before turning to drama. In 1845, she made another career move to acting, debuting at the Park Theatre with great success.

Published in 1845, Fashion showcases Mowatt's talents as a playwright and her experience as an actress. Her subsequent works include Mimic Life (1855), Twin Roses (1857), and Fairy Fingers (1865).
