Description

Extra/Ordinary Craft and Contemporary Art explores the significance of craft in contemporary art, examining how artists, critics, curators, and scholars have redefined the role of craft media. From monumental stitched paintings to large ceramics-based installations, this book delves into the historical and conceptual context of craft in modern and contemporary art.

Contributors from diverse backgrounds offer a range of perspectives on craft, including its relationship to queer theory, masculinity, and science. With contributions spanning from well-known museums to home workshops and political protests, Extra/Ordinary provides an eclectic introduction to the "craft culture" referenced by artists promoting new ways of thinking about the role of craft in contemporary art.
