Description
This book explores aniconism, a phenomenon in which divine presence is conveyed through non-representational visual markers. The contributors examine various forms of aniconism across cultures and historical periods.
From prehistoric societies to medieval and contemporary Hinduism, the chapters reveal how different types of aniconism mediate divine presence and relate to other modes of representation. A critical historiography of 'aniconism' as an academic concept is also provided.
This multi-faceted discussion of religious material culture will be of interest to those studying the intersection of religion, art, and anthropology, as well as those interested in aniconism itself.
