The steamship Deutschland set sail from Bremen in December 1875, bound for America. On board were five nuns who had been exiled by a ban on religious orders and were starting anew in Missouri. Their journey ended in tragedy when the ship ran aground at the mouth of the Thames, resulting in the deaths of all five. Ron Hansen tells the story of these events, as well as that of poet Gerard Manly Hopkins, whose life was deeply affected by the shipwreck.
