Description
Executioner: The Chronicles of a Victorian Hangman
This fascinating biography delves into the life of James Berry, Britain's hangman from 1884 to 1892. Berry was a complex figure who took a genuine interest in his 'victims' and built his own black museum, keeping scrapbooks related to his activities.
Berry's job as an executioner was marked by both gruesome incidents on the gallows and a deeply personal toll, including a notorious case where he struggled to carry out his duties. This book offers a unique insight into Berry's world and the darker side of Victorian crime and punishment.
