Description
The first Christians to encounter Islam were Syriac Christians who spoke Aramaic. Under Muslim rule from the seventh century onward, they wrote extensively about early Islam. These texts, often overlooked in modern historical accounts, reveal complex and evolving exchanges between Christianity and Islam from the seventh to the ninth century. Michael Philip Penn examines these neglected sources, including letters, theological tracts, scientific treatises, and histories, to challenge prevailing narratives of early Muslim conquests and cultural interactions. By exploring Syriac images of Islam, he reveals a culture of substantial interreligious interaction where the boundaries between Christianity and Islam were more ambiguous than distinct. This book-length analysis sheds new light on the early Islamic world and challenges common assumptions about the history of Christian-Muslim relations.
