Description

Emma in Love by Emma Tennant. Two years after her marriage to Mr Knightley, Emma finds herself feeling restless and bored. To alleviate this, she takes up matchmaking again, but this time with high stakes. Her brother-in-law, John Knightley, is in need of a wife, and Emma sees an opportunity when a young Frenchwoman enters Highbury society. Eliza d'Arblay, 20 years old and of French birth, is intriguing and romantic. Her elegant dresses and superior accomplishments make her a standout in Highbury. As John Knightley falls for Eliza, strange evidence of her past begins to emerge, casting doubt on the suitability of their match. Mr Knightley's earlier statement that he would like to "see Emma in love" takes on a new significance. As tensions rise, the true nature of Eliza's character is revealed, threatening to upend the lives of those involved. This sequel to Jane Austen's beloved novel explores themes of love, marriage, and social class with wit and nuance.
