Description

Description

A collection of scattered thoughts and observations, Emile was begun as a personal project for a mother who values her own thoughts. As Rousseau wrote, his initial intention was to create a short tract, but the subject took over, resulting in a work that is too large for its content yet too small for its scope. Rousseau's hesitation to publish the work reflects the difference between writing pamphlets and books. This introspective text offers a glimpse into the author's thoughts on education, morality, and human nature. Written in 1762, Emile remains a thought-provoking exploration of Rousseau's ideas on how individuals should be raised and educated.
