Gabriel García Márquez's El coronel no tiene quien le escriba was written during his time in Paris, where he had arrived as a journalist and intended to study cinema in the mid-fifties. However, financial difficulties arose when the newspaper for which he worked closed its doors, forcing him to redact three versions of this exceptional novel before it was finally published. The book represents a significant shift in García Márquez's style, moving away from the baroque complexity of La hojarasca and towards greater simplicity and directness. This second novel is also a story of injustice and violence, as an old retired colonel waits every Friday at the port for a letter that will respond to his long-standing claim for compensation for his service to his country. Despite the colonel's efforts, his country remains silent.
