His reign was peaceful, but his death led to bloody wars and the eventual claim of William the Conqueror. After his death, Edward's posthumous reputation grew through stories spread by monks about his magnificent foundation, Westminster Abbey. Edward was canonised as Saint Edward the Confessor in 1161 and remains the patron saint of the royal family to this day.
