Description
Edinburgh, Granton and Leith Railways is a detailed history of the railways in these areas of Scotland. In 1861, the Caledonian Railway opened a line from Slateford to Granton with connections to Granton Harbour and the Edinburgh, Dundee & Perth Railway. The CR later built an elevated line to Leith Docks in an effort to establish itself in one of Scotland's busiest ports. However, significant dock traffic never materialised, and the CR's 1903 Leith New Lines failed. In response, the North British Railway opened Leith Central station in 1903 - a large station that was eventually converted into a Diesel Maintenance Depot and closed in 1972. This book tells the story of Edinburgh, Granton and Leith railways using a wealth of superb rare and previously unpublished images. With its unique blend of history and photography, this book provides a fascinating insight into the development of the railways in these areas of Scotland.
