East German Foreign Intelligence

East German Foreign Intelligence: Myth, Reality and Controversy explores the complex world of East Germany's foreign intelligence service. This edited collection examines the Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung (HVA) as a historical problem, shedding light on its politics, scientific-technical and military intelligence, and counterintelligence efforts. The book reveals how the HVA successfully targeted key countries, including the United States, northern European and Scandinavian nations, often using double agents to gather critical information. Despite being underestimated by the CIA, the HVA played a significant role in the Cold War, acquiring crucial Warsaw Pact intelligence. This volume delves into the espionage wars, the HVA's relationship with the Russian KGB, and the successes and failures of the West German Federal Intelligence Service. A valuable resource for those interested in East Germany, Intelligence Studies, Cold War History, and German politics, this book offers a nuanced understanding of the HVA's role in shaping the course of international relations during the Cold War era.
