The Duino Elegies are a poignant and deeply personal collection of poetry written by Rainer Maria Rilke. Between 1912 and 1922, Rilke worked on these elegies in fits and starts, struggling with depression that often left the work unfinished for long periods. It wasn't until several years after the end of World War I, when a creative surge swept over him, that he completed the collection at a frantic pace. Published to critical acclaim shortly before Rilke's death, the Duino Elegies are now widely regarded as his most important work.
