Description

Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. The stories form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.

Written during a time of great change and cultural upheaval, the stories center on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination. The collection is divided into three sections, each exploring a different stage of life: childhood, adolescence, and maturity.

Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses, and the stories offer a unique glimpse into the lives and concerns of the people living in Dublin at the time.
