Description
Down with Traitors: Justice and Nationalism in Wartime China explores the complex history of collaboration and punishment in China during the 1930s to 1950s. Yun Xia examines the various groups deemed "traitors" by the Chinese government, including economic, cultural, female, and Taiwanese collaborators. The book delves into the legal and extralegal measures taken against these groups, revealing how the anti-traitor campaigns captured the essence of China's tumultuous decades. By analyzing previously unexamined code, edicts, correspondence, accusation letters, petitions, newspapers, and popular literature, Xia sheds light on the intricate power struggles between Nationalists and Communists. This study provides a nuanced understanding of the hanjian phenomenon, a critical period in Chinese history marked by intense nationalism, social tension, and political upheaval.
