Description
The Battle of Narvik: A Forgotten Story. In April 1940, the British launched Operation Weserubung's counterattack against Nazi Germany's invasion of Norway. As part of this operation, ten large destroyers were sent to secure the iron ore deliveries from Sweden to the Norwegian port of Narvik. On April 10th, a fierce sea battle ensued as Royal Naval Captain Bernard Warburton-Lee led his flotilla into the fjord under darkness and in driving snowstorms. The British destroyers Hardy and Hunter clashed with five German destroyers, resulting in the loss of both ships. Only forty-eight of the 159 servicemen on board HMS Hunter survived the ordeal. For the first time, Ron Cope reveals the untold story of HMS Hunter and her crew, who were eventually forced to march through freezing conditions into internment in Sweden. Their experiences are a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.
