Dispersal presents a unique visual record of Stratford, East London, before and after its transformation prior to the 2012 Olympic Games. Photographers Marion Davies and Debra Rapp documented 60 small businesses that were forced to move from the area in 2007, capturing their workplaces and personal histories. These photographs provide an impression of the site at a critical moment in change, alongside a short account of each business's story. Urban planning and architectural historian Juliet Davis explores how this landscape or urban 'edgeland' developed over time, using maps from 2007 to 2015 to analyse patterns of dispersal. The book also re-photographs a selection of these businesses in 2015, revealing the lasting impact of major urban redevelopment on the Lea Valley's industrial areas. By charting the progress, successes and failures of these firms, Dispersal creates a lasting record of this previously diverse working environment, one that sheds light on the complexities of urban change.
