Description
Discovering Religious History in the Modern Age by Hans Kippenberg explores how Western scholars reinterpreted religion's history during modernization. In the mid-nineteenth century, they drew on prehistorical evidence, recently deciphered texts, and ethnographical reports to study religions that had been rejected as irrational by Enlightenment philosophers. Using comparative methods, these scholars identified traces of ancient, oriental, and tribal religions in their own culture, seeing them as powerful manifestations of a human existence not subdued by rationality. They developed a theory that incorporated notions such as mysticism, soul, ritual, magic, pre-animism, world-rejection, and others to explain the continuity of worldviews and attitudes in modern culture. The study of ancient and non-Western religions helped establish awareness of a genuine human culture threatened by an increasingly mechanized world. This book examines how the historical concept of religion emerged and became plausible in the context of modernization, shedding light on peoples' experiences of modernization and their meanings for religion.
