Edgar Degas's Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando (1879) is one of only two paintings by the artist representing people of colour. This book explores the sitter's identity, presenting new research on her life and career, as well as unpublished photographic material tracing her tour across Europe. The painting's genesis is also examined, from rapid sketches completed on the spot to elaborate preparatory drawings and pastels. Degas's complex attitudes to ethnicity are also revealed, in relation to his own family background. By shedding new light on this remarkable artist and sitter, this book provides a unique insight into late nineteenth-century France and its representation of multiracial people.
