Many have left the solar system, embarking on fusion-drive starships. Meanwhile, the holdouts - those left behind on Earth - have devolved into various forms, such as dream apes, sea-dwellers, or air-dwellers. The complacency of the citizens is shattered when a disaster ravages the fleshers, revealing the possibility that the polises themselves may be at risk from bizarre astrophysical processes that seem to defy fundamental laws of nature. In response, a group of citizens and flesher refugees, including the digital being Yatima, embark on a search for knowledge that will guarantee their safety. Their quest leads them to the ancient and elusive Transmuters, who possess the power to reshape subatomic particles and cross into the macrocosmos. This journey takes them into the unknown, where the universe we know is but a speck in the higher-dimensional vacuum.
