Description
Francisco de Holanda's Diálogos de Roma is a collection of literary recreations of conversations between the young painter and humanist, and his encounters with influential artists in 16th-century Italy. In 1538, at the age of twenty, Francisco de Holanda travelled to Italy on a diplomatic mission to illustrate the country's most notable landmarks. During this time, he met Miguel Ángel, who was then sixty-three years old and widely regarded as Europe's leading artist. The conversations recorded in this volume were held with the poet Vittoria Colonna, a close friend of Miguel Ángel and a prominent figure of the Italian Renaissance. These dialogues offer insight into the artistic ideas that shaped Western art for centuries to come.
