Defending Muḥammad in Modernity challenges our understanding of the complex and contentious dispute within modern Islam. SherAli Tareen presents a comprehensive study of the Barelvī-Deobandī polemic, a long-running debate with roots in colonial South Asia. Tareen argues that this intra-Muslim contest was driven by competing political theologies, which articulated contrasting visions of the normative relationship between divine sovereignty, prophetic charisma, and everyday life. By examining previously unexplored print and manuscript sources in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, spanning the late eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, Tareen intervenes in and integrates multiple fields of study.
